Automatic Warehouse... Receive, Store, Pick, Box, and Prepare to Ship
Welcome - An automatic warehouse is a robotic system designed to use intelligent machines to take over the warehousing function for physical products. This involves receipt of bulk merchandise at the dock, documentation, breaking bulk, and storage of the individual products, order receipt, picking of the product per order, boxing and/or preparing the order for shipment, and transport to the dock for customer delivery.
Many of the above functions are being taken over by machine labor in an automatic warehouse. Human labor is still used breaking bulk upon receipt, picking for orders, and boxing for shipment.
There are examples of automatic warehouses currently being developed - such as ones for picking of prescriptions for druggists as in the above video.
As machines become more intelligent, more and more jobs which had traditionally been accomplished by human labor will migrate to machine labor. We see it starting at the gas pump, in self-checkout counters, at airline checkin kiosks, etc. The human workers in warehousing will be no exception in their loss of employment - as machines prove to be more economical for the warehouse - as they directly reduce costs of operations.
